Human Drama interview [ via internet by Grigoriy 'Tyrant' Sitenko]
Info : Human Drama is one of the mostly obscure, mystirious bands of nowadays gothic/dark wave scene. They play a strange mixure of brilliant, sad acoustic and gothic atmosphere..Althouth they don't count themselves being gothic band - they are mostly named so by music critics, and they are without doubts one of the more original bands in a dark scene... John: I had a very good childhood, growing up in a small town outside of new orleans louisiana called Chalmette. i played a lot of sports when i was young, it was my main interest. i was and still am blessed with a wonderful family. in the mid seventies i became very curious about music when i heard david bowie's "space oddity" on a local station. i searched out his music and started to learn as much about him as i could. his music taught me that music could be more than just background listening. it showed me something deeper than most other bands were showing. i became more and more interested in music and all the other artists that bowie lead me too, like lou reed , iggy pop, mott the hoople, t rex and such. in 1976 a friend of mines band needed a singer, and they asked me to sing a couple of bowie songs. i apparently did well, and they hired me. that was the beginning of it all. simply by chance i started in music. as i went along i too learned how to express myself and my feelings with my own words and music. i learned early on not to imitate, but to learn from other artists. i still learn all these years later.
Tyrant: Why did you call youself HUMAN DRAMA ? is there any history behind ? John: Human drama was called the models in the early 80's. we changed the name to human drama shortly after getting to los angeles in 1985. i think human drama was chosen because it covered completely what our music is about. human emotions. the things we all share as human beings. Tyrant: What can you say about "the scream days" time? John: The scream days were the best time in music i ever experienced. for los angeles it was a time of great musical creation. it was a time when all different bands shared the same crowd and the same club. no segregation of fans. it was a place where you went each week to see your friends and to experience the best of what was happening musically. it was wonderful to watch janes addiction develop before our eyes, as we developed. it was incredible to see the effect that guns and roses had on the world after having that affect on us. what we all had in commom was that we were original thinking bands with a common purpose. performing and sharing our music with a crowd that gave great energy back to us. it was a great great time in my life. Tyrant: Why did you change you label after some time to Project?
Tyrant:
What do you think of a modern music and about gothic scene ? Tyrant: What is gothic for you ? John: i know very little about gothic culture. it is not something i think about much. i go to a few of the clubs every now and then and have a nice time. the gothic crowd has always been good to human drama, and i am thankful for that. unfortunately i do not know much about the scene currently. Tyrant: You have really outrageous textes of songs, where does it come from ? John:
my songs are about the emotions we all share as human beings. as imperfect beings that
travel along this path of life not really "knowing or understanding" what lies
at the end. my message to listeners........you are not alone in your weaknesses or your
strengths. when you break through the "facade" we are all very much alike. [more
